Formative assessment is not associated with a formal grade but helps learners self-assess their understanding (Brown, 2005). Anderson (2008) posed the usefulness of formative assessment to "motivate, inform, and provide feedback to learners" (p. 49). Students benefited from formative practice tests with free access and immediate feedback (Cassady & Gridley, 2005). The instructional design of online courses which include opportunities for non-graded formative assessment (such as review games, self-quizzes, peer review, and early instructor review) are of perceived benefit to students (Morris, 2011).
